I’ll show couple of ways to run into Safe Mode in Windows 8 for people who have installed unwanted driver or apps, or people who want to temporary use safe mode for some special operations. In older Windows, boot menu came up by pressing F8 key during bootup, but this is removed in Windows 8.
Temporary boot in Safe Mode
If Windows 8 boots normally, there’s a very simple way to easily boot into Safe Mode. In sign in screen or open settings charm, click Power icon, then restart, but when you press restart in menu, hold down “Shift” key.
This will bring up boot option menu. Select Troubleshoot, Advanced Options, Startup Settings, then restart.
After system restart, option will show up. Select desired mode with numeric key or Function key.
Pressing 4 will boot in Safe Mode.
Same result can be obtained by pressing “Win + R” key in desktop, then enter
shutdown /r /t 0 /o
Boot in Safe Mode for a while
If you want to work in Safe Mode for a while, you can specify boot option with msconfig.
Press “Win + R” key in desktop, enter “msconfig”
System configuration window will show up, go to Boot tab. Check “Safe boot” in boot options, and click OK to apply change.
It will ask for restart, so restart.
Now, you’ll have safe boot flag set to your boot option, and will boot in Safe Mode afterward.
To set it back, run msconfig again and uncheck safe boot option.
If Windows 8 does not Boot
If Windows locks before sign-in screen, use Windows setup media.
Configure BIOS or UEFI to boot from DVD and boot from Windows setup media.
Press Next in Windows 8 setup wizard.
Click repair your computer at lower left corner.
Option screen comes up, click Troubleshoot, Advanced options, then Command Prompt.
In command prompt, enter
bcdedit /v
to list current OSs.
Find boot loader where “description” is “Windows 8”, and copy ID next to it. Double click ID and right click mouse to copy text.
Now,
bcdedit /copy {Copied ID} /d "Windows 8 SafeMode"
to make a copy of boot item. Name “Windows 8 SafeMode” to any name you want.
Run bcdedit /v again to show updated list, and item you just added should be listed at last item in list. Copy this item’s identifier.
At last, enter
bcdedit /set {Copied ID} safeboot minimal
This will add safe boot flag to boot item you just added. Check with bcdedit /v for modified options.
Enter exit to return from command prompt, then click “Use another operating system”
You should see boot item for Safe Mode in list, click to boot into Safe Mode.
Afterward, this option will be shown every time at system bootup. Use msconfig to change timeouts, etc.
For your info, Command Prompt can be launched directly at initial screen of setup wizard by pressing “Shift + F10” key.
Add Safe Mode Boot to your OS List
Same as “If Windows 8 does not Boot” just described above, but without using setup media, if your desktop is working. Just follow same steps in command prompt.
Since you need to have Administrator privilege, press “Win + X” key in desktop, and run “Command Prompt (Admin)”
To copy ID, right click window and select “Mark”, then double click ID, and right click mouse to copy. Right click window, select “Paste” to paste ID.

Robohobo, remember he’s also half white, and was largely raised by his white grderpaannts. None of which matters. It’s all about what ethnicity gives the most advantage. A generation or two ago, he would have proclaimed his whiteness from the treetops.
